Summer Book Reports For Incoming 5th Graders Summer Book Reports For Incoming 5th Graders  Name of Student: ________________________________________________________

Summer Book Report Instructions For Incoming Fifth Grade Students:

1.      Three book reports are required.

2.      Make a list of any other books read. Use the record sheet attached.

3.      Put a heading on each report paper. See example given below.

Author’s name

Make sure that the title of the book is underline or italicized.

***Write one paragraph on the character or characters in the story.

Sentences should describe the character’s personality, if important.
Feelings, thoughts, or goals of the character(s) should also be described.
This paragraph should be approximately 4-5 sentences in length.

***Write a second paragraph on the plot of the book. A brief summary of the story should appear here. This paragraph should be approximately 4-5 sentences.
 
***Write a third paragraph on the review of the story.  Tell all of the reasons that support your opinion (Be very specific). Give several supporting details.

Handwriting, spelling and grammar should be accurate.

Books should be read throughout the summer months.

Good planning eliminates reading books and writing reports in clumps at the end of the summer!

All work should be that of the student. Parents may help to proofread. If the reports are typed, they should be typed by the student only.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SUMMER BOOK REPORTS

1. Must I choose a book from the list?  Is it okay to choose another book instead?

Answer:  Yes, another book may be chosen.  Make sure the book is appropriate for your age and grade level.  Make sure that the three books are different types of books.  For instance do not read three mysteries or three sports books etc.

2.  Is it okay to type my book reports or write them on my computer?

Answer:  Yes, reports may be typed by the student or written on a computer. Handwritten reports are good too. No extra credit is given for typed work. All work is expected to be neatly done. All work is expected to be that of the student.

3.  Can I have someone else proofread or type my work?

Answer: The student may have someone help them proofread, but credit must be given to the person who has helped the student proofread.
The student must type his/her own work. It should not be typed by any one else.
No work is to be handed in as the student’s work if it is not. 
    These summer book reports should be well within the ability level of an incoming fifth grade student.

4.  How will my reports be graded?

Answer:  The teachers are interested in having the directions followed.  The headings of the reports should be correct. The first, second and third paragraphs should contain the information asked for in the directions.  The appearance of the paper should show that it was done with care.  Spelling and grammar should be correct. The third paragraph should contain several very specific reasons to back up your opinion of the book. All of this will appear on the grading rubric.

5.  Are there things I should avoid?
Answer: Yes, when writing the review paragraph do not rate your book on a scale of one to ten, thumbs up or thumbs down. These items are gimmicks used for TV and movie reviews and do not belong in your written reports.
